March 11th, 2010 - 'A Taste of Judaism: Are You Curious?'

'A Taste of Judaism: Are You Curious?' is a unique program designed to engage 'beginners' - Jewish or not - in learning more about Judaism. It has attracted more than 50,000 participants across North America during the past ten years, welcoming all who are curious about the Jewish tradition: unaffiliated Jews, interfaith couples, and interested non-Jews. Three-session classes, given free of charge, are being offered from February 14th through April in 15 Reform congregations throughout the Chicagoland area and Northwest Indiana. For those who would like to explore or re-explore the foundations of Jewish tradition or for those who may be searching for an entre into Jewish life, the course covers the Jewish perspective on spirituality, values and community. Comfortable surroundings and an informal atmosphere encourage free and lively discussion of Reform Judaism's approach to living in our rapidly changing society. Using traditional and modern Jewish texts, experienced rabbis, cantors and educators discuss the ways that Judaism addresses issues in our personal and professional lives. The program is sponsored by the Union for Reform Judaism and the Central Conference of American Rabbis.

April 02nd, 2010 - Bet Tikvah Sabbath Services in Pittsburgh, PA

In 1988, three people decided to form a group to meet the needs of Jewish gays, lesbians, and bisexuals in the Pittsburgh area. Thus was Bet Tikvah ("House of Hope") created. By 1989, the group had grown and was regularly holding member-led services. Since 1994, the congregation has met for worship at Rodef Shalom, a prominent Pittsburgh synagogue. Although Rodef Shalom is a Reform congregation, Bet Tikvah is not affiliated with any particular branch of Judaism, our members come from a variety of religious backgrounds. In addition, services and events are open to and regularly attended by interfaith couples, those wishing to explore Judaism, and heterosexual Jews. Since its beginnings, Bet Tikvah events have addressed both the social and the spiritual needs of its growing community. Religious services are held on the first Friday of every month, with additional services for Rosh Hashanah, Yom Kippur, Sukkot, Hanukkah, Purim, Passover. Services continue to be led by members of the congregation, creating a warm, involved, and active atmosphere. Members of the congregation volunteer to lead services and prepare a drasha. (written instructions are available for how to lead services). We have created our own gender-neutral siddur, mahzur, and haggadah, which consist of traditional Hebrew prayers, English translations, poems, and meditations. An oneg follows each service. At the same time, the group socializes together and celebrates life cycle events (such as conversions and namings) as a congregation. A monthly newsletter provides information about recent and future events. Bet Tikvah now counts over 80 memberships, including families of all compositions. In addition to serving the needs of Jewish gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgendered individuals, Bet Tikvah welcomes all who wish to join in worship. Feel free to contact Bet Tikvah if you would like more information about our congregation or would like to receive our monthly newsletter.
